Job Description:
The Department of Food Science at the University of Massachusetts Amherst invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant Professor level. Exceptional candidates at other ranks will be considered as well. The Department of Food Science emphasizes faculty-student interactions, interdisciplinary approaches, teamwork, and partnerships with industry. We seek outstanding candidates with scientific expertise in one or more of the following, but all areas relevant to food systems will be considered.
• Innovative food processing for improved health or environmental impact
• Mathematical modeling and/or big data analysis
• Artificial intelligence, machine learning, and robotics
• Plant-based foods to address health and sustainability challenges
• Natural product separation and characterization
• Carbohydrate chemistry
• Food packaging
• Sustainable food production and waste stream management
• Physicochemical and biochemical properties of foods
• Personalized nutrition

Requirements:
A Ph.D. in food science or related discipline is required for this position. Applicants are not required to have a prior background in food science, although relevant teaching, postdoctoral, and/or industry experience would be viewed favorably.
A successful candidate will demonstrate strong potential for excellence in research, teaching, and service to the department/university/discipline. It is expected that the candidate will develop an internationally recognized and externally funded research program. Teaching responsibilities will include an undergraduate course in food processing (FS561), as well as another undergraduate or graduate course in an area of interest. Service in supporting the missions of the undergraduate and graduate program is also expected.
